Sari Silk Sale
Feb 24 Saturday 10-2pm
This annual event happens only once a year when we open our private stock to our customers and friends.
Vintage Silk Sarees are used in Nuno Felt as a sub-straight for the wool fiber to bond with. I was first introduced to the concept many years ago while studying with Master Felter, Andrea Graham, and then again with Jean Gauger.
At the Alpaca Fiber Studio, we use hand dyed silk gauze to begin to learn on. We move into alternative fiber texture sources in the intermediate classes. We teach how to use Vintage Silk Sari. Sarees come in a variety of texture weaves within chiffon, crepe, habotai, and organza. Silk Sarees are available in wonderful pre-dyed colors and patterns to create unique visual effects in texture in your handmade nuno felt works. They are usually 45 inches wide and often available 5-6 yards long. We will cut and sell the sari by the yard.
As a helpful suggestion, photo document with your camera, any sample fiber you have at home you will want to remember.
Learning which silk to use when, requires some guidance.
–When allowing open areas of silk for an ethereal effect such as our Nuno Felt Scarf –We begin to introduce using alternative forms of silk in our Intermediate classes….
- Quilted Scarf
- Fingerless Gloves
The best weight of silk to use in Nuno Felt, and still maintains its’ drape, is an open weave that is 3-8 mm. Silk is measured in units known as Momme (mm). After many years of searching, I have finally found an affordable source in India who acquires scrap sari silk that is traded as a commodity to the paper industry. These silks are no longer wearable and are being recycled into paper. We work closely to procure these worn and tattered silks that will be combined and reinforced with fiber to create Nuno Felt.
These sarees are often the perfect weight, an affordable fabric alternative, save hours of dying time, or scrounging through thrift shops then needing to deconstruct.
We continue to grow our Annual Sale……..
–Fiber This year, we will include a nice selection of hand-dyed fiber suitable for nuno felting.
…..silk strippings, throwsters waste..
